Top 10 Best Coaches in MLS 2023: Head coaches play an essential role in a variety of sports, but in soccer, their involvement in both practice and matches gives them an even greater degree of significance.

If a club in Major League Soccer does not have a manager who is knowledgeable with the ins and outs of the league, then it is unlikely that the squad will go very far. If a mouse manages a bunch of lions, the entire team would act like cowards, but if a lion manages a group of mice, the mice will fight like lions.

This proverb highlights the actual significance of the managing job in a club; welcome to the top 10 coaches of the MLS 2023 season. This list will provide a brief summary of the most successful MLS coaches working at the present time, as well as a ranking for each of them.

We will talk about experience, accomplishments, a brief career overview, management, and honors, among other topics.

All of these characteristics are present in the most qualified coaches, whilst the ones with lower rankings either do not have enough experience or have not enjoyed a great deal of success in Major League Soccer.

A ranked list of the top 10 best coaches in MLS (Major League Soccer) in 2023

We don’t want to keep you waiting, so let’s get right into the list and take a look at the Best Coaches in MLS 2023 that currently have the highest ratings.

10. Steve Cherundolo

Although Steve Cherundolo was assigned to Los Angeles FC after a management experience with the Las Vegas Lights that was not very fruitful, we feel that this manager has the potential to be one of the top Major League Soccer managers by the year 2023.

His whole club career was spent at Hannover 96 in the German Bundesliga, where he was captain for the entirety of that time.

He was a member of the United States national team that participated in the FIFA World Cup in 2006, 2010, and 2014. After declaring his retirement from the sport, Cherundolo continued his involvement with Hannover 96 by becoming an assistant coach for the club’s amateur team. Soon after that, he was elevated to the position of assistant coach for Hannover 96’s first team.

On March 12, 2021, Cherundolo was given the position of head coach of the Las Vegas Lights FC team, which competes in the USL Championship. On the other hand, as was said earlier, he left the club because of its bad performance.

Cherundolo was given the position of head coach of Los Angeles FC, which competes in Major League Soccer, on January 3, 2022.

But, due to the fact that he is now serving as the head coach of LAFC, he does not have any big titles to his name for his management club; however, he does have the expertise necessary to guide the team to new heights.

9. Josh Wolff

The 23rd of July, 2019 was Wolf’s first day on the job as a manager. Austin FC, a Major League Soccer expansion team, will begin play in the 2021 season, and Wolff has been selected to serve as the club’s first ever head coach.

Under Wolff,

Austin FC finished its first season with a record of 9 wins, 21 loses, and 4 draws. This earned them a position in the Western Conference standings of 12th, one point ahead of Houston at the bottom. The fact that he had such a successful outcome for his trial run shows that he has an unbelievable amount of potential.

With only five games left in the season, Austin was eliminated from playoffs contention after suffering a defeat at home to Minnesota on October 16. In his first season as a head coach, Wolff played a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system, and his team was recognized for having high possession statistics and building up from the back. Wolff’s side also had a great reputation for having a solid defensive structure.

Despite having the fourth-highest average percent possession each game, Austin scored the fewest goals in the league with 35. This was despite having the fourth-highest percentage of possession on average (53.9 percent ).

The team had a chance to win the first Major League Soccer Copa Tejas when they played Dallas on the 30th of October, but they ended up losing 2–1, which dropped them to third place in the standings. Imagine what he is capable of achieving in the upcoming season if he is given the opportunity. He came so close to winning his first managerial milestone with Austin in his first season.

8. Greg Vanney

Greg Vanney is widely known for his incredible run as the head coach of Toronto FC and is widely considered to be among the top MLS managers working at the moment. He needs no introduction.

The Los Angeles Galaxy have recently appointed Greg Vanney as their new head coach. Vanney was promoted to the position of head coach in Major League Soccer on August 31, 2014, which was ten games into the 2014 regular season. This made Vanney the eighth head coach in the league’s history. He entered the game with a record of 9–9–6 in his career.

In his first game, Toronto was shut out by the Philadelphia Union 1-0. The match was his debut. His first win came against Chivas USA in a triumph that ended with a score of 3-0.

During the 2014 season, he ended in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with a record of two wins, six defeats, and two ties. After finishing in third place in the Eastern Conference, Toronto went on to win the Canadian Championship and earn a spot in the playoffs in the following season, 2016. They were able to make it all the way to the MLS Cup final, but they ended up losing to the Seattle Sounders in a shootout by a score of 5–4 after extra time ended in a goalless stalemate.

In 2017, Vanney led Toronto FC to victory in the MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield, and the Canadian Championship, completing the feat of achieving the domestic triple. On December 1, 2020, after Toronto FC was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, Vanney stepped down as the club’s head coach and announced his resignation.

The success he had with Toronto is what led LA Galaxy to sign him as their head coach when they saw his work there.

7. Frank Klopas

Frank may be an exception to this list because he is not a head coach but rather the assistant manager of Chicago Fire; however, what he did with Montreal was so great that he deserves to be called one of the best MLS coaches 2023.

A former soccer player from the United States, Fotios “Frank” Klopas is known by his nickname. After he retired, he began his post-playing career with the Chicago Fire, first as a color commentator for the team and later as a front office official and head coach for the Fire and the Montreal Impact. At the moment, he is employed with the Chicago Fire as an assistant coach for the team.

because he was successful in leading a squad that was at the time thought to be the poorest team in the league to victory in the Canadian cup, which is a significant accomplishment on Frank’s part. It is important to keep in mind that many world-class managers are unsuccessful in winning trophies with teams that feature more than one player of exceptional quality.

6. Pablo Mastroeni

Mastroeni was given the role of interim head coach of the Colorado Rapids in January 2014, shortly after Oscar Pareja accepted a position with FC Dallas. He was given the position of head coach of the Rapids on March 8, 2014, exactly one week before the beginning of the 2014 season.

2014 was the year that Mastroeni and the Rapids experienced their worst season since the start of the 34-game era of Major League Soccer. After surrendering the most goals in the league and finishing second to bottom in the Western Conference with 32 points, the Rapids’ season was a failure (62). If this is the case, then why is he considered one of the top MLS managers 2023?

During the offseason leading up to the 2016 season, this manager spent many days in London watching Arsenal and Tottenham compete in training sessions. Before going to Orlando for a supplemental coaching school, he educated himself on the teaching methods of Mauricio Pochettino, who is the head coach of Tottenham, and Arsène Wenger, who is the head coach of Arsenal.

Mastroeni was instrumental in helping the Rapids create their team identity in 2016, which was that of a defensive-minded squad that utilized a 4-2-3-1 system.

The Rapids recorded their best regular-season record ever with a club-low of six defeats and a franchise-high of 58 points. This gave them their best regular-season record ever. In 2016, the team has the fewest goals against average of any team in the league. In the annual Major League Soccer Coach of the Year election, Mastroeni finished in second place.

On December 13, 2021, he was given the position of serving as the club’s permanent head coach beginning with the 2022 season. He has demonstrated that he is adaptable and is willing to invest in himself in order to help his team be successful, despite the fact that he has a lot to learn and less experience than other MLS managers.

5. Jim Curtin

In November of 2012, Curtin became an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Union under John Hackworth, working alongside Brendan Burke and Rob Vartughian. During the 2014 campaign, Hackworth was relieved of his duties as head coach after a spate of disappointing performances, and Curtin was given the interim coaching position as the team searched for a long-term solution.

The Union improved their record under the direction of Curtin, losing only five of their remaining sixteen games and progressing all the way to the final of the US Open Cup, where they were defeated by Seattle Sounders after extra time.

In recognition of Curtin’s achievements, the Philadelphia Union made the announcement on November 7, 2014, that he will be promoted to the position of head coach, removing him from the “interim” category that he had previously held.

With their victory over their rivals New York City FC on April 23, 2016, Curtin not only established a new record for the most consecutive home wins in Union history, but he also became the coach with the most wins in Union history.

The Union were unable to build on the success they had in 2016, ending the season with the same record but being eliminated from postseason contention. For the next 2018 campaign, Curtin will continue to serve as the team’s head coach in that capacity.

In their respective coaching histories, both The Union and Curtin enjoyed their most successful season in 2020. The Union made it to the semi-finals of the MLS is Back Tournament and went on to win their first trophy, the 2020 Supporters’ Shield, by finishing first in the league standings. This accomplishment came shortly after the Union made it to the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back Tournament.

Curtin was honored with the Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year award for the first time for the outstanding work his squad did during the season.

The victory of the Union in the Supporter’s Shield earned them a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League. There, they won their first international match against Deportivo Saprissa, which was Curtin’s 100th win as the club’s head coach. The victory also earned the Supporter’s Shield for the Union.

4. Caleb Porter

There is still one more man to go before we reach the top three on the list, and as an added bonus, we will also go through the wages of these three MLS managers in 2022. Let’s go back to Caleb Porter for a moment.

After leading Portland to a 14–5–15 (57 point) regular-season record, which earned them first place in the Western Conference and third place in the league overall – just two points behind the New York Red Bulls, who won the MLS Supporters’ Shield, Porter was awarded the MLS Coach of the Year award for 2013.

The Timbers set new club marks in 2013 for points, wins, goals (54), goal difference (+21), shutouts (15), and fewest goals allowed in a single season. These records were all accomplished in the 2013 season (33). Porter was honored with the Slats Gill Sportsperson of the Year Award in 2013 by the Oregon Sports Awards. During the 2014 MLS All-Star Game, Porter captained the MLS All-Star squad to a victory over Bayern Munich by a score of 2–1.

Porter has one of the finest winning percentages among active Major League Soccer head managers. In his three seasons with the Timbers, he has led them to the MLS Western Conference Championship twice (2013-2015). The Timbers qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive year in 2015, when they also established a new single-season club record with 15 victories and led the league with 13 shutouts.

After a 2–1 victory against Columbus Crew SC, the Timbers, which Porter led, advanced to their first ever MLS Cup final. From 2013 to 2015, Porter guided the Timbers to the fourth-most points in MLS (159) under his direction, after only the New York Red Bulls (169), Seattle Sounders FC (167), and Los Angeles Galaxy (165).

On November 16, 2017, Porter and the Timbers came to an agreement that would result in them parting ways.

On January 4, 2019, Porter was selected to replace Gregg Berhalter as the head coach of the Columbus Crew. Berhalter had already resigned from his position to take over as the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team. Following closely on the heals of Tim Bezbatchenko’s hiring as the new president of Crew SC was the announcement of Porter’s employment.

3. Óscar Pareja

Oscar Pareja’s inclusion in the top three of the list of the best MLS coaches in 2023 is a desired outcome.

The Colorado Rapids announced on January 5, 2012 that they have signed Pareja to be their first head coach. After placing seventh in his first season with the Rapids, Pareja guided the team to the playoffs in 2013.

On January 10, 2014, Pareja was hired head coach of his previous side, FC Dallas. Prior to this, he had been traded to Colorado in exchange for a first-round choice in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and allocation money. In 2015, Dallas ended in second place in the Supporters’ Shield standings, despite having won the regular-season title in the Western Conference.

New York Red Bulls

The next season, the squad was victorious in both the Supporters Shield and the U.S. Open Cup, prevailing in the championship game against the New England Revolution by a score of 4–2.

It was the club’s first triumph in the Supporters’ Shield and their second victory in the U.S. Open Cup; the first victory in the U.S. Open Cup came in 1997.

On December 4th, 2019, Orlando City Football Club announced that Pareja will serve as the club’s fourth permanent head coach. Pareja led Orlando to the MLS is Back Tournament final on the resumption of play, which was the team’s first final in the MLS era despite the fact that the season had to be cut short due to an outbreak of COVID-19 two rounds into the season.

Orlando topped Group A with seven points from their three matches, and they eliminated the defending Supporters’ Shield champions, Los Angeles FC, in the quarterfinals. However, they were defeated by Portland Timbers by a score of two goals to one in the championship match.

Even though we do not have accurate information on how much he is getting paid, it seems that this particular coach is not the avaricious type, and we should not expect him to get paid more than the regular MLS coaches salaries 2023. Considering this, we should not expect him to get paid more than the regular MLS coaches salaries 2023.

2. Peter Vermes

Get ready for a long list of accomplishments because this coach has accomplished a lot, and by a lot we mean practically all of the trophies that can be accomplished by a coach in the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Vermes is the head coach in Major League Soccer with the longest tenure, and he has won four major titles throughout his time as a manager, which places him in second place among all current managers in the league as of the year 2023.

The first trophy Vermes ever won as a head coach was the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which his team, then known as the Kansas City Wizards and later renamed Sporting Kansas City, won by defeating the three-time defending champions, the Seattle Sounders FC, in a penalty shootout. This victory gave Vermes his first trophy in his career.

The next season, under Vermes’ leadership, the team won the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup by prevailing in a penalty shootout against Real Salt Lake. As a consequence of this, he is the only person in the history of Major League Soccer to ever win the MLS Cup with the same team in both the roles of a player and a coach.

The victory against the Philadelphia Union on penalties in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final at Talen Energy Stadium gave Vermes his third trophy as the head coach of Sporting KC. Vermes was able to add the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to his collection of trophies as a result of Sporting KC’s victory over the New York Red Bulls at Children’s Mercy Park by a score of 2–1.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd regular-season match, a one-nil victory over the Houston Dynamo. With this victory, Vermes became the all-time leader in games coached with one club in the history of Major League Soccer (MLS). On October 3, 2020, Vermes defeated the Houston Dynamo 2–1 to become only the fifth coach in Major League Soccer (MLS) history to win his 150th regular-season match. This victory occurred against the Houston Dynamo.

1. Bruce Arena

If we had wanted to include all of Bruce Arena’s trophies in this article, you would have been in for a long ride because Bruce has been one of the most successful coaches ever exciting in this league and is the best among MLS coaches 2023.

There is no question that Bruce Arena is the most successful coach in Major League Soccer. Before the start of the 2014 season, Arena extended his contract for several years and became the second coach in MLS history to win four MLS Cups, trailing only Sigi Schmid in that regard. In spite of criticism he received when coaching the United States men’s national team, Arena has been praised for restoring the Los Angeles Galaxy into a squad that can once again compete successfully.

After Arena resigned from his position with the national team, he was rumored to be a potential candidate for a variety of coaching and management positions, including those with the Columbus Crew and the Scotland national team.

Following Brad Friedel’s resignation on May 14, 2019, he was selected to take over as head coach and sports director of the New England Revolution. On June 2, his first game in command of the club resulted in a victory over his former club, the Los Angeles Galaxy, by a score of 2–1. The New England Revolution won 11 consecutive matches, which was enough to earn them a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2014.
