The following is a ranking of the Top 10 Best Goalkeepers in MLS Major League Soccer for the year 2023: At this point in the 2023 Major League Soccer season, teams have either played 11 or 12 of the 34 regular-season games that are scheduled for them.

This marks the one-third mark of the season. At this stage, we have a decent notion of which players are rising to the top of the leaderboard at their respective positions and which ones are not.

In this article, we shall rank the top goalkeepers in Major League Soccer for the current season.

The criteria will differ slightly from goalkeeper to goalkeeper, but the purpose of this ranking exercise is to determine which keepers are the finest right now, a third of the way through the season that is currently being played. These are, without further ado, the  best keepers in Major League Soccer for the year 2023.

It’s possible that the goalie position group in major league soccer is the deepest and most talented of all the position groups. The league has several goalkeepers who have a shot at competing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as a few more who may not get the opportunity but arguably should.

You won’t find New England Revolutions goalkeeper and anticipated starter for the United States national team in the World Cup Matt Turner on this list. This summer, he will be moving on to play for Arsenal, and he will no longer be with an MLS team.

In a similar manner, Maarten Paes, the goalkeeper for FC Dallas, is currently on loan from his Eredivisie (Netherlands) club, Utrecht.

There are four people who need to be mentioned specifically as honorable mentions. Alex Bono of Toronto FC holds the record for the most saves in the league with 51, and Pedro Gallese of Orlando City leads the MLS with six clean sheets, despite the fact that he has accomplished this feat with only 26 saves.

Gaga Slonina, who is only 18 years old yet plays for the Chicago Fire, is exceptional for his age and will probably end up at the top of this list someday. Simply said, he is not there yet.

10. Steve Clark, Houston Dynamo – 5 (62 saves)

You decided that goalkeeper Steve Clark should be awarded the Dynamo Theory Player of the Month trophy for May 2022. Congratulations! During the last month, Steve has two shutouts and made some important saves that saved the Houston Dynamo in matches they were losing. Following his outstanding play in the three-point victory over LA Galaxy, Clark was selected to the MLS Team of the Week.

With a score of +2.7, the seasoned goalie has moved up to seventh place in the MLS rankings for post-shot predicted goals minus goals allowed. According to the post-shot percentages of the shots he faces, Clark is making 2.7 more saves than would be anticipated to avoid goals. Clark finished last year’s Major League Soccer campaign ranked fourth in this category, demonstrating that his ability to block shots is among the very best in the league.

9. Brad Stuver, Austin FC – 6 (54 saves)

Brad Stuver made six saves and contributed to the team’s expansion. Sunday night’s match between Austin FC and the reigning champion Columbus Crew ended in a scoreless draw.

Stuver, who is now 30 years old and has played in just nine games combined over his first eight Major League Soccer seasons, has posted two consecutive shutouts and three in the last four contests. Austin’s Stuver leads Major League Soccer with 54 saves and is tied for the league lead in shutouts. He has played every minute of this season for Austin.

Austin, which has a record of 2-5-4 and has scored a league-low six goals this season, has not scored a goal in its past three games and has scored just once in its last seven.

8. Pedro Gallese, Orlando City – 7 (54 saves)

The performance of Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese is probably the most interesting aspect of the game as a whole. The Orlando City goalkeeper Gallese is consistently excellent, and he has made a number of saves that have been both significant and outstanding. These saves have allowed his team to remain in the league.

7. Zac MacMath, Real Salt Lake – 7 (71 saves)

This was the beginning of a career for the current goalkeeper for Real Salt Lake that would involve zigzagging, turning, twisting, and bending. There were numerous instances in which it appeared like MacMath’s Major League Soccer (MLS) career was about to become much more obvious, but instead, it merely became murkier, or even seemed to vanish entirely. Despite this, he did not give up.

The difference between a career that began at the RioT and one that was restarted at the RioT is the accumulation of 500 saves.

Zac MacMath, who is 30 years old and has made 500 saves, is currently playing sweeper at the stunning Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota, which is located beneath the raucous Wonderwall.

Zac MacMath is one of the Top 10 Best Goalkeepers in MLS 2023.

6. Gabriel Slonina, Chicago Fire – 8 (42 saves)

In a recent podcast, retired United States national team veteran Tony Meola made the comparison between Gabriel Slonina and Gianluigi Buffon. Meola described Slonina as “one of the biggest goalkeeping prospects in the world.” Slonina is now refining his profession for the Chicago Fire of the Major League Soccer (MLS), who are currently in the cellar of the league’s standings. Many commentators believe that Slonina possesses the qualities necessary to become a prominent goalkeeper in the future.

Slonina made his debut in the professional league in 2021, and at the age of 18, he was already quite impressive with four clean sheets in 11 games. Slonina has been the bright spot for a Chicago Fire team that has struggled mightily this season and currently sits in last place in the MLS standings.

Slonina has appeared in 20 games and has recorded 8 clean sheets while making 42 saves. Real Madrid has expressed interest in the goalie for the Fire, but it appears that the Spanish giants were unable to reach an agreement on the transfer fee.

5. Los Angeles Galaxy — Jonathan Bond

Best Goalkeepers in MLS 2023

For the squad that is ranked fourth in the Western Conference of the Major League Soccer, Jonathan Bond is the goalkeeper. He has an outstanding goals-against average of 0.91 and keeps the net clear of balls. After keeping a 1-0 shutout against the San Jose Earthquake, the goalkeeper for the LA Galaxy was awarded the Major League Soccer Player of the Week award for Week 7.

The 6-foot-5-inch Englishman struggled to find a position that was a good fit for him in his own country with clubs of a similar size, such as Watford, Reading, and West Bromwich Albion. After two seasons and a third of LA LA Land, it would appear that Bond, who plays Jonathan Bond, has at long last discovered his place in the world.

4. Nashville SC — Joe Willis

Best Goalkeepers in MLS 2023

The goalkeeper for Nashville, who is known for his impressive mustache, comes in at number four on this list of the best goalkeepers in the MLS. The goalie, who hails from St. Louis, Missouri, is 33 years old and has previously played for both D.C. United and Houston Dynamos. However, now that he is a seasoned vet, he serves as the traffic cop for one of the strongest defenses in the MLS, which is played by Tennessee.

Willis is a capable defender who, in addition to assisting Walker Zimmerman and the rest of his team in getting organized in front of him, can also stop the ball. He has played 11 matches and has a save percentage of 72.7 percent and a goals against average of 1.09 goals. Not bad for a goalkeeper who started the season by traveling to each of the first eight games of the season.

3. NYCFC — Sean Johnson

Best Goalkeepers in MLS 2023

The goalkeeper for New York FC and the United States national team, Sean Johnson, has outstanding statistics. On 24 saves, he has a save percentage of 70.6 percent and a goals against average of 1.0. But Johnson’s blocking the ball isn’t the only reason he’s so high on this list; that’s not the only thing he does well.

Johnson is widely considered to be the best passing goalkeeper in the Major League Soccer (MLS). His distribution enables New York City Football Club to play their game in a fast-breaking style, which is required of a modern goalkeeper. Although it shouldn’t come as a surprise, the goalkeeper for Manchester City’s Major League Soccer squad plays at an excellent level.

2. Minnesota United — Dayne St. Clair

One of the highlights of the current season for Minnesota United is the play of their Canadian goalkeeper who is 25 years old. Dayne St. Clair has made a phenomenal 40 saves in nine games, giving him a save percentage of 80 percent and a goals against average of 1.11.

The teenager is on his way to becoming a genuine superstar and will be regarded as one of the most talented goalkeepers in the MLS for the 2022 season. It is possible that he is playing the Canadian Men’s National Team into a difficult situation with his play. With St. Clair playing as well as he is right now, there is a chance that he could displace Milan Borjan, a Canadian who now plays for Red Star Belgrade and is 34 years old. If he is unable to dislodge Borjan, he will also battle Maxime Crépeau, the backup goalkeeper for LAFC.

1. Philadelphia Union — Andre Blake

Andre Blake, a Jamaican super-keeper who is 31 years old, is widely considered to be one of the Best Goalkeepers in MLS (Major League Soccer) in the year 2023. The numbers tell the story all by themselves. Blake has just nine goals against in 990 minutes. He has made 35 saves, giving him a save rate of 79.5 percent and a goals against average of 0.82.

After selecting Blake with the first overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft in 2014, the Philadelphia Union haven’t had a single second of second thoughts about their decision. Blake has made 181 appearances for the Union. The Union are now in third place in the Eastern Conference after playing the New York Red Bulls to a tight 1-1 draw, but the team is still a contender for the MLS Cup, and a large part of it is because Blake is playing so well at the back.
