Alvarez was formerly a member of the American U15 team. He started all three of their games while serving as their captain at the 2016 International Festival of Football in Rosario, Argentina, in April 2016. He helped the Americans win the tournament. Alvarez contributed to two additional goals in the opening game against Talleres de Córdoba, which resulted in a 5-1 triumph. In a 2-0 victory over Uruguay’s U15 team, he also scored. Alvarez was re-called to the United States U15s in June 2016 for a four-team tournament in Zagreb, Croatia. He made one start against the Croatia U15s during the tournament.
Alvarez debuted in September 2016 for Mexico’s U15 team. On August 11, 2017, they defeated the Cayman Islands U17 in a friendly 7-0 victory with him scoring twice for them.
He also played for Mexico U15s during their 2017 CONCACAF Boys’ Under-15 Championship championship run, and he gave his former club, the United States U15s, the game-winning assist.
Alvarez made his debut for the Mexico U17 team in a 1-0 victory over Argentina U17s, scoring the game’s lone goal.
He was on the list of players who would compete in the 2019 U-17 World Cup.
In the competition, he scored four goals, including the decisive free-kick strike against the Netherlands in the semifinals, which helped Mexico finish second to Brazil.
Alvarez was selected for the American national team in November 2020 in preparation for an exhibition game against El Salvador in Fort Lauderdale. But because he hadn’t yet submitted a one-time switch form to FIFA in order to play for the United States officially, he didn’t get any playing time in that game.
Alvarez was called up to the Mexico national team in March 2021 for exhibition games against Wales and Costa Rica. He made his international debut on March 30 against Costa Rica, replacing Jess Manuel Corona in the second half of the team’s 1-0 triumph.
Alvarez opted to play for Mexico in June 2021 despite offers to represent the United States.
A few days later, he took Rodolfo Pizarro’s position on the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup team who was injured.
His substitution against Trinidad and Tobago on July 10, 2021, irrevocably cap-tied him to Mexico.
Alvarez was a member of the Mexico under-21 team that competed in the Maurice Revello Tournament in May 2022. He scored two goals as Mexico finished third.
