Ronwen Williams joins Mamelodi Sundowns
The transfer of SuperSport United’s captain Ronwen Williams to Mamelodi Sundowns for an undisclosed fee and a five-year contract has been officially announced, putting an end to all the rumors that had been circulating about the player’s future.
Stan Matthew, the CEO of Matsatsantsa, took the opportunity to extend his best wishes to Williams before he left the club and expressed his appreciation for everything the goalkeeper had done for the team.
“Ronwen is a cherished son and a legend of the club. He has cemented his position in the annals of the club’s history by becoming the player with the longest tenure and the most appearances in the records of the club’s history. When it comes to football, loyalty is hard to come by these days, which is what makes our 18 years with Ronwen so extraordinary,” he told the club’s media department.
“We are really pleased of the fact that we were able to generate a player at the juvenile age of 12, and that we were able to help him achieve his boyhood goals of playing for and captaining both his club and his nation. Ronwen leaves us with trophies in the cabinet and very precious memories, and we wish him the very best of luck in both his personal life and his future career with Mamelodi Sundowns.
The goalkeeper, who was born in Gqebherha and is also the captain of the national team, will join a vast array of talent currently present at The Brazilians, including luminaries such as Dennis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene, who have previously denied Reyaad Pieterse from playing.
Williams was a member of Matsatsantsa for a total of 18 years, during which time he received three Nedbank Cup medals, two MTN8 Cup medals, and one Telkom Knockout medal for his performance as the club’s number one goalkeeper. Williams has expressed his gratitude to the club for their role in his development.
He stated, “I would want to show my gratitude to the chairman, Mr. Khulu Sibiya, for enabling me to be a member of such a fantastic club for such a long period of time and for taking good care of me.”
“To the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Stanley Matthews, I will be eternally indebted to you, and for each and every promise you made to me that you have successfully fulfilled, I will be forever thankful to you as well as the board. I will be indebted to you for the rest of my life.
“To each coach and member of the staff at the academy, I will not be where I am today without you guys, and I want to say thank you very much for playing such a significant part in my career. I want to express my gratitude to everyone who is a part of my SuperSport United family. Ronwen Williams will always be a United player.”
